Learn to take incredible photos with your iPhone

The iPhone is by far the most popular camera in the world, and each year Apple makes significant improvements to its capabilities.

Despite this, it’s hard to shake the idea that it’s not a “proper” camera. Truly amazing shots are always taken by professionals with high-end DSLRs, right? Wrong.

Introducing iPhone Photography Academy, a full-fledged photography course aimed specifically at teaching its readers to take better photos with the iPhone.

Academy founder Emil Pakarklis explains: “one of the common iPhone photography misconceptions is that the iPhone can’t be used for serious photography. While DSLR cameras are technically superior, the quality of a photo mostly depends on the photographer’s intent and creative vision.”

Photography is about more than just hardware or technical prowess; as they say, the best camera is the one you always have with you.

That said, finding the perfect subject is only half the battle: you also need the know-how to turn what you see into a stunning finished image.

IPHONE

Tips & Tricks has you covered for the camera and editing basics, of course – you can learn how to use functions including burst mode, exposure lock, and HDR right here with us – but to become a successful iPhone photographer, there’s no better resource than the iPhone Photography Academy.

The course starts off with the iOS camera essentials, before moving through important principles of composition and lighting, and finally showcasing more advanced technical photography skills. It’ll show you the best combination of apps to make complex editing work quick and easy. There’s a lot to work through here and the results showcased on the site are stunning.

I wasn’t always the guy teaching thousands of people how to take incredible photos with their iPhone…

And frankly, not too long ago I didn’t know how to take interesting photos myself.

The truth is that I was never much of an artist… I couldn’t draw, I couldn’t write poetry, so the traditional art forms were always out of my reach. But I wanted to express myself and develop the creative side of my personality, and that’s why photography has always appealed to me.

It’s so rewarding when a photo you take – a photo that didn’t exist just a moment ago – shows other people the unique and beautiful things that you see in the world around you. It could be the amazing places you visit while traveling, the great times you have with your family, or the unique moments that nobody else would be able to enjoy without you taking a photo.

And it gets even more rewarding when you can look back at these moments years later when the memories are long gone… And with photos you can experience these memories again.

You see, I always loved photography. But things didn’t really work out as I wish they did…

foodphotographyguides review LORiS

A quite recent addition to the food photography blogging niche, Food Photography Guides largely seems to exist for the purpose of selling food photography lessons and Lightroom presets (there’s a “welcome” pop-up again fishing for your data). However the site also offers a number of free food guides and tutorials on its blog to hook you in.

If you are just starting out, there’s quite a lot of good advice to be found here, and the tone of the articles is personable and the content clear. Definitely one to keep an eye on in the future.

ose wanting to learn food photography often face a dilemma as to whether they should sign up for a food photography course or just try to learn on their own. With so many great free resources out there, you might well be asking what’s the point of doing a food photography course.

But although there is indeed plenty of great info out there, it’s important to remember that most of these blogs offer food photography tips for free in the hope of getting you to sign up for one of their own courses or workshops (fine, they have to cover their expenses somehow). Clearly then, they are going to hold back some of the most important information, otherwise there would be little point in anyone stepping up to the paid version.

Nonetheless, the free tips and advice some of these blogs offer can be really helpful for beginners. At the very least, they can be a great way of getting the basic knowledge under your belt beforehand, so as to be in a better position to get the most out of a course.

And who knows, in some cases the paid or subscription food photography lessons offered by these blogs might even be worth it too. Here at Best Food Photography we have no direct experience of the premium content offered by any of the sites we review here. However, we can say that if we were in the market for such a thing, we’d put our trust (and money) in some of these blogs more than others.

The majority of the blogs we feature here are clearly run by knowledgeable people with genuine professional food photography experience, and so they likely offer decent quality paid workshops etc. too. With that said though, judging by the quality of the free content provided, one or two of the others would not be worth investing good money in (or, to be perfectly honest, even worth just giving your email address to). For free though, they are absolutely fine. Especially if you are just starting out.

With these minor caveats out of the way, which are currently the best food photography blogs for learning about the creative and technical aspects of food photography?

CreativeLive Review LORIS

Today, Chase’s CreativeLive project is much bigger than just a photography educational platform. It has business, design and video sections but, by far, photography is still the biggest part of the project.

These days, you can not surprise anybody with the releases of new new educational platform. But CreativeLive has a very distinctive model.

First, they broadcast their classes live and, most often, in front of a live audience.

Second, it is free. That’s right—absolutely free!

Third, it has a social component. You can interact with the teacher and students during the live broadcast by posting questions and comments using the CreativeLive platform.

So, you’re probably wondering, “How do they make money?”

They use the unconventional “freemium” business model.

The live broadcast is free, but if you want to follow any of the courses at your own pace, you must purchase the course. Plus, with the paid version, you get source files, learning resources and access to private Facebook groups.

CreativeLive has two major benefits for users:

  • If you cannot afford to purchase the course at full price, you can dedicate enough time to follow the course during the live broadcast. This is free.
  • If you are looking for a great course to purchase, CreativeLive gives you an incredible opportunity to test drive the course to see if you like the instructor and format before buying.

creatThree types of courses CreativeLive offers:

Live Broadcast. As I mentioned before, when a new course is released, it is broadcast live for free. There is no limit on how many students can join and you have the opportunity to interact with the presenter and the audience.

Rebroadcast. Occasionally, CreativeLive rebroadcasts previously released courses. The goal here is to introduce new audiences to older courses. This is still free but there is no live interaction during the rebroadcast.

Courses from Catalog. You can purchasse any course that was previously released. You can watch it online or download it to follow the course offline and at your own pace.

In general, I find that the quality of the courses is good, but it does vary depending on the personality of the instructors and their teaching styles.

I believe that with the model CreativeLive employs (allowing students to test drive the learning material before they buy) requires them to keep the quality of their courses at a high level.

Here is the example of the paid version of Travel Photography Collection by two well-known photographers and educators Ian Shive and Ben Willmore.

The Best Way to Use CreativeLive

Go to the CreativeLive website and select the ON AIR option from the top menu.

Scroll down to the All Upcoming Classes section and activate the Photo & Video filter.

If you see a LIVE label next to the date, it means the course will be broadcast for the first time.

The rest of the courses are rebroadcasted.

Use the RSVP button to enroll for free.

Digital Photography School review LORIS

What is Digital Photography School?

Digital Photography School is one the most popular and longest running photography blogs to date. It was founded by Darren Rowse who is a digital photography enthusiast. He created the website in order to share tips and advice to photographers who want to maximize their cameras.

Rowse used to own a digital camera review site and he has received numerous emails from his readers asking for various tips on how to make the most of their cameras. He came to a conclusion that while there are millions of cameras being purchased every year across the globe, a massive number of individuals could be using their cameras to achieve better results. His main focus on his articles in the past couple of years was mostly tips on cameras and because of that he decided to start a website purely dedicated on how to tips, thus giving birth to dPS or Digital Photography School in 2006.

How Does Digital Photography School Works?

This ‘School’ is not a formal one by any means. There are no classes, no teachers, no exams – rather it’s a challenging and enjoyable learning environment where they share tips and techniques to help you improve all aspects of your photography and in their Facebook Group where over 75,000 of individuals share what they’re learning, show their photos and ask and answer each other questions.

Furthermore, unlike most schools, the information in Digital Photography School is free. They do run limited advertising though, as well as affiliate programs and they promote their own resources to help the company cover costs and keep expanding. These affiliate links (largely to the Amazon book store) earn dPS a small commission on any purchases that anyone makes when they visit Amazon after clicking on one of their links, however there is no cost to their readers.
