This article discusses everything you need to know about buying your own professional Roulette wheel. If you don’t carefully consider the advice, you can end up buying a wheel that’s nothing like real wheels in today’s casinos, except that it “looks” much the same. Different wheels can produce very different spins.
The full size of a roulette wheel you would find in casinos is 80cm straight across the middle. This measures from the very outer parts. It is 32 inches.
The most common wheel designs are John Huxley, Cammegh and Abbiati. There are many other brands, but these are the most common. Unless you are using the wheel just for fun, don’t buy the cheap ABS plastic wheels you’ll find on Ebay. Buy one of the real designs and brands used in casinos.
You can still find wheels that are over a century old, but they are very different to modern wheels. I’m assuming you are looking for a wheel to practice your roulette system, or perhaps test a roulette computer. And you aren’t going to benefit by testing on a wheel that’s very different to what you’ll play against. I suggest purchasing a design that’s no more than 5 years old. Modern casinos still have wheels that are even 30 years old, but they are rare. They only exist today because most casinos regularly maintain their wheels. In fact many casinos have their own in-house wheel refurbishing service.
To any inexperienced player, all roulette wheels would look much the same. But on closer inspection, you will notice different metal deflectors (diamonds), types of pockets, different angles of particular components and so on. Seemingly subtle differences can make a roulette wheel easy to predict, or near impossible to predict. Things to look for include:
1. Size and shape of diamonds: these are the metal deflectors the ball usually hits. From a distance, the diamonds may appear to be the same on different wheels. But have a closer look. Smaller diamonds with irregular shapes tend to produce the most random spins. But it is actually the combination of other wheel features, and the diamonds, that determine the predictability of spins.
2. Height and shape of pocket separators: these are the pieces of metal between pockets. Some have straight edges, while some kind of the “V” shape, which is designed to deflect the ball in one of two directions. Also the shapes of the pockets themselves make a big difference to how the ball will bounce.
Every small part of modern roulette wheels is purposefully designed. Again have a very close look and try to understand what the ball will do at each point. You may begin to appreciate the effort taken to carefully design the wheels for maximum unpredictability. But you may also begin to understand what would inevitably make spins more predictable. Almost always, a particular feature is a double-edged sword, meaning it may make the spin less predictable in some cases, but more predictable in others.
Generally Roulette wheel manufacturers are not permitted to sell wheels to the public. There are exceptions if you know someone in the company, although it is sometimes even illegal to own a roulette wheel. But in most parts of the world, it is perfectly legal provided you don’t use it to run an illegal casino.
For most people, the only option to own a real casino wheel is to buy an ex- casino wheel.
There are a number of reasons why a casino will replace a particular wheel. Sometimes it becomes obsolete and replaced with a new model. Or perhaps it fails a roulette wheel bias test, and needs to be replaced because players are exploiting it. At least these are the two main reasons.
Your reason for purchasing the wheel will determine whether or not a particular wheel will be suitable. For example, if you want a wheel just to play with friends for fun, just about any wheel will do. If you want a wheel to test bias analysis, you will probably find that most used wheels do have a bias. But if you want to test the roulette computer, then it is okay for a wheel to have a bias because most roulette computers do not bother with assessment for bias. Wheel bias is a condition where particular winning numbers occur more frequently than others. Usually the edge you can get from a biased wheel is only a few percent, whereas the edge from a roulette computer can be well over 100%.
It is not a problem if a wheel has various bumps and dense around the edges. These are purely cosmetic and do not affect the operation of the wheel. The main problem with used roulette wheels is the ball track becomes worn and cracked. The ball track is made from a kind of epoxy resin. On all wheels, eventually it cracks and is very difficult to repair. The effect of this is the ball tends to fall off the ball track at particular points more than others. This leads to dominant diamonds, which is the condition where the ball hits particular diamonds more than others. And ultimately it makes the roulette spins much more predictable.
Just about every roulette wheel has dominant diamonds. However, on a very well maintained wheel in good condition, it occurs because the wheel is not placed on level surface. Even a 1 mm difference in height between sides of the roulette wheel will cause the dominant diamond effect.
This can be corrected by more accurately levelling the wheel, although it is very difficult even with precision equipment. This is why almost every roulette wheel has significant dominant diamonds. The difference is with a used wheel with a badly worn ball track cannot be corrected by more carefully levelling the wheel.
There is not much difference between a dominant diamond on a used wheel, and a dominant diamond on a brand-new wheel in perfect condition. But the significant difference is the ball will not roll smoothly on the used wheel’s ball track.
You will notice that on a new wheel, the ball rolls very smoothly and gradually decelerates. But on an older wheel, even in casinos today, the ball may be released very quickly only to suddenly decelerate. This is a sign of a worn ball track. Another way of knowing if the ball track is worn is the ball may not roll more than 12 revolutions before falling, if the ball track is worn.
First I suggest contacting the wheel manufacturers and asking if they will sell you a new wheel. If they don’t, ask about used stock. Another option is eBay. Don’t be fooled by imitation wheels that look like the originals. There are many cheaper wheels that are manufactured in China, although they are considerably easier to beat than the wheels used in modern casinos.
We found ourselves with a pretty big dilemma when we first went to the Bodog88 casino. The graphics looked amazing, and the site was well laid out, but there was just one problem. Everything was in Chinese, and as worldly as we like to think we are, that was above our pay grade. We were left with what looked like an amazing site from the Bodog brand, but no way to review it.

Our initial thoughts and feelings were great as everything looked to be laid out well and the graphics were high quality. The biggest thing that stood out to us right away besides the great layout was the quality of the slots games offered. Deposits and withdrawals were all fees free and super quick which was awesome to see. There were only two withdrawal options, which is not ideal. However, both options were free and would be to you within an hour, so maybe we’re exiting the world where we need a million different options. Regardless, the fewer withdrawal options still got a point deducted, though it may be a little harsh with how good the other options are. We just like variety.

They offered phone, email and live chat support that was easily accessible from anywhere on the site, and was available regardless of whether or not you had a player account or not. We tested the live chat and the agent was friendly, well spoken, and most importantly, helped us with our requests successfully. 95% of the site looks great regarding user interface. The games are laid out and organized well, and everything you need is easy to find. The only reason that we docked a half of a point is that the sportsbook was laid out in a different way than we are used to. Our thoughts on the layout of the sportsbook were mixed. Everything looked to be very clean; the smaller font size of the bets made for a cleaner and easier to read feel. The part that was different for us was the sports menu along the left-hand side of the screen. The main sports were arranged the same as most sites, but when you clicked on the expand button on each sport, it was a bit different.
Most sites will give you a list of the leagues offering bets and allow you to select options that way. For example, if you were to click on basketball you would see NBA, NCAA, etc. as options. With Bodog88, though, bets are arranged by type. So when we clicked on basketball, the options were HDP & OU, Mix Parlay, and Outright. Whether this is a pro or a con is going to come down to personal preference for you. Personally, we prefer them arranged by league as that is what we’re used to. For those of you that like a certain bet type, this may be perfect for you.
For those that do want to bet by league, there is an option after you select the sport above the odds on the center of the screen. You can select “Select League” and choose what you are looking for. While this functionality is what we were asking for, it is a bit strange to have it there and not on the main menu to the left. Again, though, this is going to be personal preference, and even if you like it the “usual” way, it won’t take you long to get adjusted to this layout.
Next to the Select League button, you also have the options of changing the odds into a format that you prefer. Options include Hong Kong odds, Indonesian Odds, American Odds, Decimal Odds and Malay Odds.
The updating of the odds is a little different than some sites, and again, is going to come down to personal preference (or you may not even care about the fact this is any different from anywhere else.) A lot of sites will update the odds individually as they happen which will give you a fast-paced feel, almost like you are watching a stock market board change. At Bodog88, odds are updated two ways. With one, you have the option of manually clicking an update button on all the sports or the individual one that you are looking at. The second option is to wait, and they all update as a whole every 90 seconds.
The perk to this would be that things aren’t as “wild” looking as they are on other sportsbook pages. Again, some people will like this and some will not. They do flash the bets after updating to let you know that they have changed, but they don’t flash a specific color to let you know which way they changed. Other books will flash red or green around a bet to let you know if they went up or down. This is a feature we would really like to see them implement.

Customer service options were great at Bodog88 with phone support, email support and live chat support. The Bodog88 platform did not just meet our expectations, but exceeded them by miles. We expected a lot from a company under the Bodog brand, but they delivered even more than we had hoped. As mentioned, BoVegas is a new entrant on the casino scene. Founded in 2016, the owners of the casino are not listed on their website. This is always a great frustration for me because it already makes me feel like the casino has something to hide. I am not one to let this go, so I did some further investigating and have determined that finding the actual owners of this casino is proving to be harder than hitting a Royal Flush at one of their Video Poker games. So, for the time being, I am not entirely sure who the owners are, but I also don’t care all that much.
BoVegas has a license from the country of Curacao, which is the equivalent of getting your Driver’s License out of a Cracker Jack box. It looks nice, and they can advertise that they have one, but really you as a player don’t get anything out of that aside from perhaps one place to start looking if you are having trouble getting paid by the site.
One nice part about being licensed in Curacao: there aren’t really any restrictions on where you can offer your casinos. BoVegas takes full advantage of this by offering their games for real money to essentially every country in the world. Here are the few exceptions to that rule:

Also, there wasn’t anything lost in the way of graphics when playing the games on a mobile device; RTG continue to make improvements to their casino to make it mobile friendly, and in 2017 I believe this is where all casino software suppliers should be spending the majority of their focus.
RTG casinos have the opportunity to either run progressive games on their own system or tie their jackpots into the entire network of licensees. It appears that BoVegas has chosen to go on their own, and that leaves players with a less than stellar lineup of Jackpot slots titles. The largest jackpot I saw when I wrote this review was just short of $30,000. While this is nothing to sneeze at, I have seen jackpots in the hundreds of thousands on other RTG operator websites. It’s hard to say why BoVegas chose to go this route, but for now, we consider it a disappointment.
RTG recently acquired a live dealer casino supplier, and it was assumed that all their licensees would benefit from this acquisition. At the time of this review being written, BoVegas does not offer live dealer games, and this again hits me with some disappointment. I love live dealer games – the dynamic is entirely different, and they aren’t nearly as cold as the video-only versions of the games. I am hopeful that this is coming along in short order for BoVegas and that we will see Live Dealer games there soon.
